Zelkova serrata is a deciduous tree species native to Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan.
It is valued for its aesthetic beauty and is frequently used as an ornamental plant. This tree can reach up to 30 meters in height, although it typically grows between 15 and 24 meters. The leaves are oval to lance-shaped with serrated edges, turning shades of yellow and orange in autumn, creating a beautiful contrast with the green.
The bark is smooth and gray, peeling off in thin strips as the tree matures. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, while the fruits are small and round, yet add visual interest to the overall appearance of the plant.
Japanese zelkova is a hardy species that thrives in temperate climates and tolerates a variety of soil types, including slightly acidic to neutral soils. It prefers a sunny position but can also adapt to partial shade. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant.
It is particularly well-suited for urban environments due to its tolerance of pollution and its ability to thrive in limited spaces. It is often planted in parks, flower beds, or along streets. In addition, it is quite resistant to pests and diseases.
Beyond its resilience, Zelkova serrata is highly appreciated for its ornamental value: its elegant form, vibrant autumn colors, and smooth bark make it a highly decorative plant, perfect for enhancing gardens and public spaces.
