Acer x freemanii is an ornamental hybrid tree resulting from the cross between Acer rubrum and Acer saccharinum. This hybrid combines the best characteristics of both parent species, offering a fast-growing plant with an elegant habit and a dense, well-structured canopy.
It typically reaches a height between 12 and 20 meters, with a canopy that expands up to 12-15 meters, taking an oval or columnar shape depending on the cultivar.
The deciduous leaves are palmate, medium-sized, with 3-5 deeply serrated lobes; in summer, they display a bright dark green that turns intense red, orange, or purple in autumn.
This species grows rapidly and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. It prefers full sun or partial shade exposure and adapts well to various soil types, favoring fresh, well-drained soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH, but also shows good resistance to heavier or temporarily moist soils. It is hardy and cold-resistant, and tolerates air pollution well. Maintenance is minimal, requiring only light pruning to remove dry or poorly positioned branches and to maintain the harmonious structure of the canopy.
Acer x freemanii can be planted as a street tree, thanks to its elegant shape and tidy habit, as a shade tree for medium and large gardens, and as an urban greenery element in parks and city streets. It is also ideal for urban reforestation and public green space projects, thanks to its fast growth and sturdiness.
