Quercus ilex is an evergreen oak native to the Mediterranean regions, symbolizing the Mediterranean maquis and perfectly adapted to the hot, dry climates typical of these areas. Due to its robustness and longevity, it is highly valued in both natural and landscaping contexts.
It appears as a medium to large-sized tree with a compact growth habit and a rounded, dense canopy of dark green foliage. The leaves are leathery, lance-shaped, and slightly serrated, with the underside covered in dense grey-silver hairs that help reduce water loss. This unique leaf structure allows the holm oak to tolerate prolonged periods of drought and high summer temperatures.
The growth of the holm oak is moderate, but once established, it can live for centuries, becoming a stable and defining element of the Mediterranean landscape. It prefers well-drained, calcareous or neutral soils but also withstands difficult conditions with ease.
The fruits are oval-shaped acorns, maturing in just one year, and serve as a food source for various wildlife species.
In addition to its environmental value, Quercus ilex is widely used in green design for its ability to withstand urban pollution and its evergreen canopy, which provides shade and beauty throughout the year. It is therefore ideal for boulevards, urban parks, and private gardens in Mediterranean areas.
