Quercus x turneri ‘Pseudoturneri’ is a semi-evergreen ornamental tree, resulting from the natural hybridization between two oaks: Quercus ilex, an evergreen Mediterranean species, and Quercus robur, a deciduous oak. This hybrid combines the hardiness of Quercus ilex with the elegance and vertical structure of Quercus robur, making it particularly suitable for continental climates and urban uses.
The growth habit is upright and regular, with a compact and rounded canopy that develops in height up to 10–15 meters. The canopy is well-branched from the base in the early years, then becomes more elongated with a more prominent trunk, making the tree suitable for tree-lined avenues as well.
The leaves are leathery, dark green, with lobed margins, very similar to those of the holm oak but larger. The unique feature is the partial persistence: the plant retains much of its foliage during the winter, especially in mild climates, shedding it only just before spring budding. This characteristic makes it ideal for creating structural greenery even in the cold season.
It produces inconspicuous male spring flowers and sparse, unobtrusive acorns.
Adaptable to various soil types and tolerant of drought, urban pollution, and wind, Quercus x turneri ‘Pseudoturneri’ is an excellent choice for urban settings, public gardens, parking lots, and residential parks.
It does not require drastic pruning and has a more orderly and predictable growth over time, resistant down to -18°C.
