Morus platanifolia ‘Fruitless’, also known as the fruitless mulberry, is a selected variety of white mulberry (Morus alba), cultivated exclusively for ornamental purposes.
Unlike fertile forms, this cultivar is sterile, meaning it does not produce fruit, making it ideal for use in public spaces, avenues, and private gardens where the dropping of sticky berries or the attraction of insects should be avoided.
It is a deciduous tree with a globular, expansive, and shady habit, often trained with a regular, well-branched canopy that provides dense and pleasant shade during the summer months. It typically reaches a height of 5–8 meters, with an equally wide canopy, making it very suitable as a shade tree, either as a solitary specimen or in rows.
The foliage is one of the main reasons for choosing this plant: the large, lobed, and deeply incised leaves resemble those of the plane tree, hence the name “platanifolia.” They are a beautiful bright green in spring and summer, with a warmer hue in autumn before they fall.
Since it does not bear fruit, this variety does not dirty the ground, nor does it attract pesky insects, making it perfect for urban settings, schools, parking lots, or recreational areas.
Extremely hardy and adaptable, Morus platanifolia ‘Fruitless’ thrives even in poor, compact, or slightly calcareous soils, tolerates drought, wind, urban pollution, and high summer temperatures. It has no special cultivation requirements and responds well to pruning, both to control the canopy and to maintain a more orderly shape.
