Quercus palustris is a deciduous oak variety native to North America, widely appreciated for its high ornamental value and rapid growth. It is distinguished by its slender, upright habit, with a pyramidal canopy in its youth that slightly spreads as it matures, always maintaining a neat and architectural appearance.
The tree can reach a height of 20–25 meters. The leaves are deeply lobed with slender tips: in summer, they are a shiny dark green, while in autumn they turn a deep red or purple.
The growth is quite rapid, making it an excellent choice for public and private landscaping projects that require visual results in a short time. The fruits are small, rounded acorns attached to short pedicels, maturing over two years and are favored by wildlife.
Quercus palustris prefers deep, cool, acidic or slightly acidic soils. It does not tolerate calcareous soils well, where it may show signs of iron chlorosis and stunted growth. It requires good drainage but can also tolerate temporarily moist soils, hence the name “palustris.
It is perfectly suited for the creation of street tree plantings in wide avenues, public and residential parks, and gardens.
Its cold resistance and spectacular autumn foliage make it one of the most appreciated ornamental oaks by landscape architects, especially in urban settings.
