Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ is a deciduous ornamental tree belonging to the Rosaceae family, highly appreciated for its elegant columnar shape, abundant flowering, and decorative foliage.
The tree reaches a height of between 8 and 12 meters, with a width of about 3–4 meters. Its narrow, upright growth habit, with closely spaced branches, gives it a slender and tidy appearance, making it ideal for areas with limited space.
The leaves are oval with slightly serrated edges, glossy green in spring and summer, and turn into a stunning mix of red, orange, and yellow in autumn, providing a very attractive decorative effect. Flowering occurs in spring and features abundant, fragrant white blossoms that appear before the leaves. The small, round fruits mature from green to dark brown.
In terms of cultivation, Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ prefers full sun and well-drained, fertile soils, but it can also adapt to less-than-ideal conditions. It is moderately drought-tolerant once established but requires regular watering in its early years. Maintenance is minimal and limited to light pruning to maintain its columnar shape.
This tree is highly cold-hardy, tolerating temperatures down to around -25°, and is well-suited to urban conditions due to its tolerance of pollution and heat.
Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ is an excellent choice for street planting, residential and public gardens, urban green spaces, or as a standalone specimen or planted in rows, thanks to its neat growth, decorative blooms, and spectacular autumn color.
