Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’ is one of the most appreciated and widespread ornamental cherry varieties, belonging to the Rosaceae family and native to East Asia.
It is a deciduous tree with an upright and slender habit when young, which gradually broadens over time, reaching an average height of 6–10 meters and a width of about 5–6 meters.
Its most spectacular feature is the abundant and showy flowering that occurs in mid to late April: the flowers are double, bright pink, clustered in pendulous bunches along the branches, covering the tree so densely that the branches and leaves are almost completely hidden.
The foliage is bronze-green in spring, turning bright green in summer, and taking on golden-yellow hues in autumn. The leaves are oval, finely serrated, and arranged alternately along the branches, contributing to the plant’s overall elegance even outside the flowering period.
Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’ prefers full sun exposure and grows best in well-drained, fertile, and moderately cool soils. It has good cold tolerance (down to about -20 °C) and requires minimal care, only light pruning after flowering to maintain a balanced shape and remove damaged or poorly placed branches. Growth is moderately fast during the early years.
This variety is particularly used in tree-lined avenues, public parks, private gardens, and urban areas, where it is appreciated for its visual impact during flowering and its elegant habit.
