Platanus acerifolia, a hybrid between Platanus orientalis and Platanus occidentalis, is a large deciduous tree widely used in urban and landscape settings for its exceptional adaptability and strong ornamental value.
This plane tree is distinguished by its majestic form and broad, rounded crown, which can reach a diameter of 15–25 meters and a height of 20–35 meters. The bark is particularly decorative: smooth and thin, it tends to peel off in large patches, revealing mottled areas of green, cream, and grey, giving the tree a distinctive and recognizable appearance even in winter.
The leaves are large, palmate with 3 to 5 deeply lobed and serrated segments, resembling those of maples—hence the name acerifolia. Their bright green summer color shifts in autumn to warm shades ranging from yellow to bronze-orange, adding seasonal ornamental value.
The flowering, not particularly showy, takes place in spring with pendulous, spherical, unisexual inflorescences. These are followed by characteristic globe-shaped fruit clusters of achenes, which often persist into winter and release fluffy seeds.
Platanus × acerifolia thrives in full sun or partial shade, adapts well to various soil types—including poor or slightly compacted soils—and tolerates both short periods of drought and temporary moisture. It is also one of the most pollution-resistant trees and can withstand cold temperatures down to –20 °C.
These qualities make it ideal for tree-lined avenues, public parks, and large urban green spaces, where its broad canopy provides cool shade and a striking presence in the landscape.
