Melia azedarach is a deciduous ornamental plant belonging to the Meliaceae family. Native to South and East Asia, it has spread widely throughout the Mediterranean due to its great adaptability and strong decorative impact.
It typically reaches a height of 8–12 meters, with a broad, rounded, and airy crown that provides pleasant shade.
The leaves are bipinnately compound, glossy green, deeply serrated, and light in texture. In autumn, they turn golden yellow before falling.
One of the most appreciated features of this species is its abundant and fragrant blooming, which occurs in late spring and early summer. The small, lavender-lilac flowers with yellow centers are gathered in light, fragrant panicles. After flowering, spherical amber-yellow fruits appear. These are not edible and turn brown in winter, remaining on the tree for a long time and adding ornamental interest even in the leafless season.
From a cultivation standpoint, Melia azedarach is hardy, undemanding, and easy to grow. It prefers sunny locations but also tolerates partial shade. It adapts to various soil types, even poor or calcareous ones, as long as they are well-drained. Once well established, it shows good drought resistance and is well suited to Mediterranean or warm temperate climates. It can withstand short frosts down to about -8/-10 °C.
Thanks to its tidy structure and regular growth, it requires very little maintenance—just light pruning during the early years to shape the crown. It is also ideal for those looking for a fast-growing ornamental tree.
Particularly suitable for use in private gardens, public parks, and tree-lined avenues, thanks to its light shade and decorative flowers. It is also well suited to urban greening projects, Mediterranean-style landscapes, and low-maintenance planting schemes in sunny areas.
