Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Gold Rider’ is an evergreen conifer particularly valued for its vivid golden-yellow foliage, which it retains throughout the growing season. This color characteristic makes it a highly decorative element for hedges, borders, and gardens, adding brightness and contrast even in more shaded environments.
Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Gold Rider’ retains the typical fast growth of Leylandii, with an upright and dense habit, but it is slightly more compact compared to the classic cultivar. It can reach heights of 10-12 meters, with a contained width of around 2-3 meters, making it ideal for creating effective visual barriers and windbreaks without occupying too much space in width.
The scaly foliage, soft and fine in texture, is lighter compared to traditional Leylandii, with shades ranging from golden yellow to light green in more shaded areas. The plant prefers sunny exposures to enhance its coloration but also tolerates light partial shade.
This cultivar adapts to various types of soil, preferring well-drained soils with a good supply of organic matter. It is resistant to cold, down to about -15°C, and shows good tolerance to urban pollution and salt spray, making it suitable for city gardens or coastal areas as well.
Maintenance involves regular pruning, at least once or twice a year, to maintain its compact shape and encourage branching.
From a reproductive standpoint, ‘Gold Rider’ produces inconspicuous male and female flowers in spring, but as a sterile hybrid, it does not produce fertile seeds.
