Aesculus × carnea is a deciduous ornamental tree belonging to the Sapindaceae family, obtained from the cross between Aesculus hippocastanum (common horse chestnut) and Aesculus pavia (red horse chestnut). This hybrid combines the best qualities of the two species: the imposing habit and cold resistance of the European horse chestnut, with the intense coloration of the flowers of the red horse chestnut.

It can reach a height of about 10–15 meters, with a wide, rounded, and dense crown that provides abundant shade in summer. The leaves, large and palmate, are composed of 5–7 toothed lobes of dark green color, which turn yellow-bronze shades in autumn.

The distinctive feature of this tree is its spring flowering, which occurs between April and May: large upright panicles, sometimes 20–25 cm long, open with coral pink-red flowers, often with yellowish hues at the center, very striking and decorative. The flowers are also sought after by bees and pollinators, making Aesculus × carnea a valuable choice for urban and rural biodiversity.

Unlike the common horse chestnut, Aesculus × carnea produces fewer fruits, which are spiny capsules containing brown seeds that are not edible. This makes it more suitable for public spaces, as it requires less cleanup of fallen debris.

From a cultivation standpoint, it is a very hardy and resilient plant that prefers sunny or partially shaded locations and adapts well to a wide range of soils, provided they are well-drained. It also tolerates air pollution well, making it suitable for tree-lined avenues, parks, schools, squares, and large private gardens.
