Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Inaba Shidare’ is a prized cultivar of the Japanese maple, selected in Japan for its extraordinary ornamental elegance. It is a small deciduous tree or shrub with a weeping growth habit, one of the most appreciated varieties in ornamental garden design.
The canopy develops with arching, pendulous branches, forming a compact and decorative structure, perfect for becoming a focal point in flower beds, near water features, within courtyards, or in rock gardens. The leaves are deeply dissected, finely lobed, and visually striking. They emerge in spring with a very intense purplish-black color, which remains stable throughout the summer. In autumn, the plant offers a spectacular color change, with hues shifting to bright, vivid red before falling.
Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Inaba Shidare’ is a slow to medium-growing, long-lived maple that typically reaches a height of 1.5–2.5 meters and a width equal to or greater, developing a wide and low form that is easily manageable even in small spaces. It is particularly suited for container cultivation on terraces or patios, as long as well-drained, fresh, and slightly acidic soil is provided, along with regular watering during the summer.
It prefers partial shade exposures but can tolerate direct sun in the morning or in climates that are not excessively dry. In very hot or windy areas, it is best to place it in sheltered locations to avoid leaf scorch.
Thanks to its natural architectural form and decorative foliage, it is widely used in ornamental gardens, flower beds, borders, as a solitary specimen, or in small groups.
Despite its compact size, the visual impact of this variety is striking, making it ideal for those looking for a dramatic element with minimal maintenance. It does not require frequent pruning, except for light containment or cleaning interventions at the end of winter.
