Morus alba ‘Pendula’, commonly known as the Weeping White Mulberry, is a fascinating ornamental variety highly valued for its distinctive habit. It is a small-growing tree, typically grafted onto a vertical trunk, from which long, flexible, and drooping branches cascade towards the ground, creating a structure similar to a natural canopy or green dome.
This architectural and striking form makes it perfect as a focal point in formal gardens, courtyards, or small spaces where ornamental effect is a priority. The branches gracefully curve down to the ground, providing dense shade and creating a highly aesthetic impact, even in the absence of showy flowers or conspicuous fruits.
The deciduous leaves, large and glossy, vary in shape: on young branches, they can be deeply lobed, while on mature branches, they tend to become entire and oval. During the growing season, they take on a vibrant green color, which transforms into golden yellow in the autumn.
The flowering, which occurs between April and May, is barely noticeable: small yellow-green flowers that develop with no significant ornamental value. Fruit production is sporadic or absent in this cultivar.
Morus alba ‘Pendula’ is a very hardy plant: it withstands cold, summer drought, and urban pollution well. It has no special soil requirements and adapts to different conditions, as long as drainage is good. Maintenance is low, but regular pruning is recommended to control the canopy and maintain an orderly, symmetrical shape.
Thanks to its compact and ornamental shape, it is ideal as a solitary tree, next to pathways, courtyards, rose gardens, or water features, and is also perfect for small gardens.
