Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ is a variety of maple highly appreciated for its extraordinary deep purple-red foliage, which adds a touch of elegance and vibrant color to any garden or green space.
This ornamental deciduous tree or shrub grows moderately up to 3–6 meters in height, with a broad, rounded crown that creates a beautiful scenic effect throughout the growing season.
Its leaves are palmate, with 5-7 deep, pointed lobes, and stand out for their dark red hue, which can shift to a deep purple, especially in spring and summer. In autumn, the foliage lights up in warm colors, ranging from bright red to orange, creating visually stunning color displays. The flowers, which are not very showy, bloom in spring with small pinkish flowers.
Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ prefers semi-shaded positions or partial sunlight. It thrives in cool, organic-rich, well-drained soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH.
This maple is resistant to temperatures as low as about -20°C, making it suitable for temperate climates with cold winters, but not excessively harsh ones. It requires medium-level maintenance, with regular watering during the summer months and light pruning to maintain its shape and promote balanced growth.
A distinctive feature of the plant is its fruits, called samaras, which form after flowering and ripen in the autumn.
Thanks to its aesthetic qualities and ease of cultivation, Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ is ideal for Japanese gardens, shaded corners, container compositions, and decorative areas where a touch of intense and refined color is desired.
