Taxus x media ‘Hillii’ is an evergreen shrub highly valued for its compact form, slow and steady growth, and lack of berries.
It is a male variety of the hybrid between Taxus baccata (European yew) and Taxus cuspidata (Japanese yew), bred to combine the hardiness of the former with the compact form and resilience of the latter.
This variety is particularly suitable for those who desire perfectly geometric formal hedges, thanks to its exceptional tolerance to pruning and its neat, dense growth.
Unlike the female common yew, Taxus x media ‘Hillii’ does not produce toxic red berries, making it ideal for public spaces.
The needle-like leaves are a deep, intense green, glossy, and neatly arranged on the branches. During the winter months, they retain their color without yellowing, providing a decorative visual barrier throughout the year.
The growth habit is upright and slightly rounded, with a dense branching structure from the base, making it perfect for elegant visual screens or windbreaks.
One of its main strengths is its environmental versatility: it tolerates shade well, grows in almost all types of soil (as long as they are well-drained), withstands cold down to -28°C, and tolerates urban pollution.
