Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Frisia’ is a deciduous ornamental tree belonging to the Fabaceae family.
It is a selected cultivar of Robinia pseudoacacia, native to North America, primarily distinguished by its bright golden-yellow foliage, which makes it a highly decorative plant in gardens, tree-lined avenues, and public spaces.
It grows quickly and reaches heights between 8 and 12 meters, with a light, irregular, and generally rounded crown. The habit is slender when young but tends to spread wider with age, up to about 5–7 meters.
The leaves are deciduous, composed of numerous oval leaflets arranged in a pinnate fashion. In spring and summer, the foliage takes on a bright golden yellow color that intensifies in the sunlight. In autunno il colore tende a sbiadire verso un giallo più chiaro prima della caduta.
Flowering usually occurs between May and June, with clusters of fragrant white flowers similar to those of the common Robinia but often less abundant. After flowering, it produces flat brown pods containing seeds.
Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Frisia’ is a hardy plant, resistant to both cold and drought once well established. It prefers sunny locations and adapts to various soil types, provided they are well-drained. It also tolerates poor or calcareous soils to some extent. The branches are rather fragile and can break in strong winds, so it is advisable to plant it in sheltered areas or perform regular pruning.
Like all Robinias, it tends to send out suckers from the roots and may require some attention in managing the surrounding space.
