Prunus ‘Accolade’ is an ornamental cherry tree, the result of a hybrid between Prunus sargentii and Prunus subhirtella. It is appreciated for its early and abundant flowering, as well as its harmonious growth habit. This specimen reaches a height of 6–8 meters, with a broadly spreading crown that can reach 5–7 meters in diameter. It grows at a moderate and steady pace, giving the tree a rounded and well-balanced shape.
The flowering is very early, usually occurring from mid to late March, ahead of many other flowering cherry varieties. The blossoms are semi-double, with 8–12 soft, delicate pink petals, gathered in small clusters that cover the bare branches, creating a soft and enchanting visual effect. The bloom lasts for about 10–14 days—longer than many similar cultivars—making ‘Accolade’ especially valued for its spectacular spring display.
The deciduous leaves are ovate with serrated margins, bright green in spring and summer, turning vibrant shades of yellow and orange in autumn, adding additional seasonal ornamental value.
Prunus ‘Accolade’ adapts to various soil types as long as they are well-drained, and it prefers sunny or partially shaded exposures. It is hardy down to –20 °C, shows good tolerance to common Prunus diseases, and adapts well to urban environments thanks to its moderate resistance to pollution.
Maintenance is relatively simple: its moderate and steady growth allows the shape to be maintained with light, occasional pruning, aimed at removing dead or damaged branches and improving crown airflow.
It is ideal for medium-sized gardens, tree-lined avenues, public parks, and residential settings where a visually striking yet easy-to-manage ornamental element is desired.
