Malus ‘Red Sentinel’ is a small ornamental tree belonging to the Rosaceae family, highly valued for its abundant flowering, decorative fruiting, and compact habit.
It generally reaches a height of 4–6 meters, with a dense, slightly rounded or oval crown, making it perfect even for small spaces. In spring, it is covered with numerous white flowers with pink buds, fragrant and very attractive to bees and pollinators. The abundant flowering creates a strong ornamental effect.
After flowering, the tree develops small bright red fruits that mature in autumn and persist on the branches well into winter. Hence the name “Red Sentinel,” for its ability to maintain vivid color in the landscape even when most plants are bare.
The leaves are deciduous, bright green in spring and summer, turning golden yellow in autumn. The habit is orderly, with slow to moderate growth and minimal pruning needs, mainly for shaping the crown or removing damaged branches.
Malus ‘Red Sentinel’ prefers sunny or partially shaded locations and adapts to many soil types, provided they are well-drained. It is cold-hardy, tolerates air pollution well, and is suitable for isolated planting or groups. It is widely used in ornamental gardens, mixed borders, public parks, and as a specimen tree in small courtyards.
Additionally, it is a low-maintenance tree that does not require intensive treatments and retains continuous decorative value for months.
