Magnolia stellata is a plant belonging to the Magnoliaceae family, native to Japan, and is known for its beauty and elegant appearance.
It is a slow-growing shrub or small tree that can reach a height of 4–6 meters (13–20 feet) and a width of about 4 meters (13 feet). Its growth habit is compact and rounded, with thin, delicate branches that spread out in a branching pattern, but without becoming too invasive.
The plant has a decorative appearance and is often used in small to medium-sized gardens, or grown in large pots or containers.
The leaves of Magnolia stellata are deciduous. In spring and summer, they are a bright green and have an ovate or elliptical shape with smooth edges. In autumn, the deep green gives way to shades of yellow and orange before the leaves fall completely.
The star-shaped flowers bloom in early spring, with slender white petals. Magnolia stellata is one of the first to bloom, bringing color and freshness to the garden at the end of winter and beginning of spring.
The plant has a shallow root system, with roots that spread horizontally, making it suitable for well-drained, cool soils. It’s important to avoid water stagnation, as Magnolia stellata does not tolerate excessive moisture in the soil. This plant prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soils rich in organic matter, but it can also adapt to neutral soils.
The ideal exposure is in full sun or partial shade, although a sunny position encourages more abundant and vigorous flowering. Magnolia stellata is cold-hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C.
Pruning is not necessary, except to maintain a compact shape or to remove dead or damaged branches.
