Juglans regia, commonly known as the common walnut, is a majestic deciduous tree belonging to the Juglandaceae family. It has been cultivated for centuries both for the production of its valuable fruits (walnuts) and for its high-quality timber.
It can reach a height of 25–30 meters, developing a wide and rounded crown with a regular and elegant habit. The leaves are compound, aromatic, and dark green in color, turning golden-yellow shades in autumn, providing a beautiful seasonal ornamental effect. The bark is light gray and smooth when young but tends to darken and fissure over time.
Juglans regia prefers full sun exposure and grows best in deep, fertile, well-drained soils. It tolerates drought reasonably well once mature but requires good soil moisture during the early years of growth. It is a hardy species, also suitable for harsh climates (down to -20°C), and has a moderately fast growth rate.
It begins to bear fruit around the fifth to seventh year after planting, producing walnuts enclosed in a green husk that naturally splits open at maturity, around September-October. In adulthood, the production can be abundant and regular.
This tree is ideal for large gardens, parks, isolated plantings, as well as for production plantations and agroforestry systems. Additionally, its wood is highly valued in woodworking for its warm and even grain.
Pruning is focused in the early years to form the structure and select the central trunk; as an adult, it tolerates light pruning but not drastic cuts.
