Carpinus betulus is a deciduous tree belonging to the Betulaceae family.
It is a hardy and long-lived species, highly appreciated for its adaptability, resilience, and ornamental value.
In natural conditions, it can reach a height of 15–20 meters, with a dense, oval or elongated crown that can be easily shaped through pruning. For this reason, it is often used in hedges, espaliers, or as an architectural tree. The bark is light gray—smooth in young specimens and becoming more wrinkled and furrowed with age.
The leaves are alternate, simple, and ovate-elliptic in shape, with a doubly serrated margin and very prominent veins. Bright green during the growing season, they turn golden yellow in autumn.
In spring, between April and May, it produces inconspicuous flowers: the male ones are pendulous, yellowish catkins, while the female ones are shorter and upright. The fruits are small achenes surrounded by a three-lobed bract, grouped in pendulous infructescences that ripen in summer.
Carpinus betulus adapts well to various soil types, as long as they are fresh, well-drained, and rich in organic matter. It tolerates both shade and full sun, withstands winter cold, and can endure periods of drought once well established. It is highly resistant to air pollution and frequent pruning, which is why it is also used in urban environments as a street tree or to create dense, geometric hedges.
It requires low maintenance: pruning is only necessary if a precise shape is desired, while watering is recommended during the first few years or during particularly dry periods.
