Acer palmatum, known as the Japanese maple, is a deciduous ornamental plant highly valued in gardens around the world for its elegance and spectacular foliage. Native to East Asia, it is characterized by an elegant growth habit and finely lobed palmate leaves, composed of 5 to 9 lobes that resemble the shape of an open hand.
During spring and summer, its leaves take on shades of light or medium green, while with the arrival of autumn, they transform into a kaleidoscope of warm, vibrant colors: intense red, orange, and yellow, making this plant a focal point in seasonal gardens.
Acer palmatum prefers exposures in partial shade, thriving in well-drained, cool soils rich in nutrients, with a neutral or slightly acidic pH.
Resistant to temperatures around -15°C, it is suitable for temperate climates with mild or sheltered winters. Pruning is generally limited and is mainly used to maintain a harmonious shape or to remove dry or damaged branches.
Thanks to its refined appearance and spectacular colors, Acer palmatum is ideal for ornamental gardens, decorative flowerbeds, and especially for container growing and bonsai, enhancing any space with a touch of oriental elegance.
