Acer buergerianum is a deciduous tree belonging to the Sapindaceae family. Native to the temperate regions of East Asia, it is highly valued both for its elegant habit and its spectacular color display in autumn.
The tree typically reaches a height between 6 and 12 meters, with a spreading, rounded habit that creates a broad and airy crown. The branches are slender and flexible, with smooth, light gray bark.
The leaves are trifoliate, composed of three deeply serrated lobes, giving the tree a unique appearance compared to other maples. During spring and summer, the leaves are a bright green, while in autumn they put on a stunning color show, turning warm and intense shades ranging from bright yellow and orange to vivid red hues.
Flowering occurs in spring, with small, inconspicuous greenish or yellowish flowers arranged in pendulous racemes. These flowers are followed by the production of the characteristic samaras, the winged fruits that mature toward the end of summer.
Acer buergerianum prefers sunny or partially shaded locations and adapts well to various soil types, provided they are well-drained. It favors slightly acidic to neutral soils and tolerates cold winters, being hardy to moderately low temperatures.
From a maintenance perspective, it is an easy-to-manage plant. Pruning is generally done in late winter or early spring, mainly to remove dead or damaged branches and to maintain a harmonious shape. It adapts well to urban spaces due to its moderate size and tolerance to air pollution.
It can be used as a specimen tree, in groups, or as part of mixed hedges, and is appreciated both in private gardens and public spaces such as parks and avenues.
