Quercus x ‘Crimson Spire’ is an ornamental columnar hybrid oak, resulting from a cross between Quercus robur and Quercus alba. Belonging to the Fagaceae family, this tree combines the vigor and hardiness of the European oak with the beauty and coloration of the American oak.
It stands out for its very narrow, upright, and orderly habit, perfect for avenues, narrow spaces, or urban gardens. It reaches a height of about 10–15 meters, with a narrow width between 2.5 and 4 meters, maintaining a compact silhouette even at maturity.
The leaves are lobed, similar to those of Quercus robur, dark green during spring and summer, but turn an intense crimson red in autumn—hence the name “Crimson Spire.” This makes it a tree with high ornamental value, appreciated for its spectacular autumn display.
It is a deciduous, hardy, and cold-tolerant plant that also tolerates drought well once established. It adapts to various soil types, preferring well-drained soils. It has excellent resistance to powdery mildew (a common fungal disease in oaks) and urban pollution, qualities that make it ideal for city environments.
It requires very little maintenance, with limited pruning in the first years to shape it. Thanks to its relatively fast growth and dense, orderly crown, it can also be used as a vertical windbreak or ornamental green barrier.
