Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ is an ornamental variety of small deciduous tree belonging to the Rosaceae family, characterized by an upright habit with a globular canopy and a moderately fast growth rate, reaching a height between 6 and 8 meters.

The bark is smooth and light gray in color. The leaves, oval-shaped with a serrated margin, are initially reddish-purple, which gradually darken to a near-black hue as the tree matures, giving the plant strong ornamental value due to the contrasting colors.

Flowering occurs early in spring, with simple flowers that are white or pale pink, gathered in corymb-like inflorescences. The fruits, small red or purple drupes, are generally of little ornamental interest.

From a cultural perspective, Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ prefers full sun or partial shade exposure and tolerates a wide range of soil types, preferring well-drained, medium-textured substrates with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. The species shows good tolerance to periods of moderate drought once it is well-established.

Agronomic management involves post-flowering pruning to maintain shape and remove any damaged or diseased parts. It is generally resistant to common pathogens but can be susceptible to aphid infestations and fungal diseases under conditions of excessive moisture or poor air circulation.

Its landscape use is versatile: ideal as a specimen tree or in groups in parks and gardens, it is also suitable for creating hedges or decorative borders. The dark foliage allows for interesting color combinations with light-leaved species or with brightly colored blooms, making it particularly appreciated in contemporary urban green designs.
