Hibiscus syriacus is a deciduous shrub of great ornamental value, widely spread in temperate gardens due to its abundant and prolonged blooming throughout the summer.
The plant reaches a height between 2 and 4 meters, with an upright and compact habit, making it suitable both as a solitary plant and in groups or decorative hedges. The branches are numerous and flexible, with smooth, light brown bark.
The leaves are simple, ovate with finely toothed margins, and a bright green during the growing season. In autumn, before falling, they turn a light yellow shade.
The true highlight of Hibiscus syriacus is its spectacular summer flowering. The blooms, which appear from July through September, are large and shaped like a bell or funnel, with five soft, slightly crinkled petals. Colors range from pure white to pink, lilac, and violet, and some varieties feature a distinctive dark “eye” at the center, creating a striking color contrast.
Each flower lasts only one day, but the plant continuously produces new buds throughout the warm season, ensuring a long-lasting display of color. The fragrance is delicate and pleasant, though not very strong.
Hibiscus syriacus is very hardy and adaptable: it thrives in various types of soil, as long as it is well-drained, and grows well in full sun or partial shade. It tolerates both hot summers and cold winters, down to around -20 °C. It is also resistant to pollution and urban conditions.
This plant is easy to grow and requires moderate maintenance. Pruning, recommended after flowering, promotes the growth of new branches and encourages a richer bloom in the following years.
