Euonymus japonicus ‘Aureopictus’ is an evergreen variety belonging to the Celastraceae family, highly valued for its variegated and ornamental foliage, which adds brightness and color to gardens throughout the year. This shrub is characterized by an upright, compact, and rounded habit, with steady growth reaching about 1.5–2.5 meters (5–8 feet) in height and width, making it ideal for medium-height hedges, borders, and as a specimen plant in landscape compositions.
The leaves are ovate, leathery, and glossy, with a bright dark green color bordered by a pronounced creamy yellow or golden variegation, which makes the plant especially decorative and radiant.
Euonymus japonicus ‘Aureopictus’ tolerates both full sun and partial shade, although the variegation is more pronounced in sunny positions. It prefers well-drained and moderately fertile soils but is also tolerant of poorer or slightly calcareous substrates. It is cold-hardy, withstanding temperatures down to light frosts, but in areas with very harsh winters, protection is recommended.
This plant is often used for ornamental hedges and borders, as well as a standalone shrub.
Its compact growth and evergreen foliage make it very versatile for creating mixed compositions in formal, rock, or modern gardens, always adding a touch of color and structure.
Maintenance is simple and involves light pruning, preferably done in spring or late summer, to maintain its compact shape and encourage new growth. The plant is generally resistant to diseases and pests, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a low-maintenance ornamental solution.
