Euonymus japonicus ‘Elegantissima Aurea’ is a highly valued evergreen shrub for its variegated foliage, which adds brightness and color to the garden throughout the year. Its leaves are small, oval, with a bright green color bordered by a deep golden yellow, particularly noticeable in the new spring leaves, giving the plant a vibrant and decorative appearance. The habit is compact, dense, and rounded, with thin branches that create a thick and uniform canopy. It can reach a height and width of about 1.5–2 meters if allowed to grow freely.

The plant produces small, inconspicuous light green flowers in spring, followed by red berries that add visual interest and attract wildlife.

Euonymus japonicus ‘Elegantissima Aurea’ prefers exposures from partial shade to full sun: in full sun, the yellow variegation of the leaves is brighter, while in partial shade, the foliage tends to a darker green. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soils, neutral or slightly acidic, but is also tolerant of moderately alkaline soils. Once established, it withstands short periods of drought and can tolerate temperatures down to about -15°C.

This variety is easy to grow and requires little maintenance; light pruning is recommended to maintain its compact shape and encourage the growth of new branches, but it can also be pruned more drastically to control its size. Due to its characteristics, it is ideal for mixed borders, low hedges, colorful flower beds, rock gardens, and as a container plant for terraces and balconies.
