Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca’ is a majestic evergreen conifer, highly valued for its distinctive blue-silver foliage, which adds an elegant and refined touch to gardens. Native to the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, this cedar is a robust and resilient variety, well-suited to temperate and Mediterranean climates.
The plant has a conical or irregular habit, reaching a height ranging from 12 to 25 meters under optimal conditions, although it is often cultivated in a more compact form. The needles are stiff, short, and a vivid blue-gray, arranged in dense tufts along the branches, giving the crown a full and compact appearance.
Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca’ prefers sunny exposures and deep, cool, well-drained soils with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. It is a species resistant to both intense cold (down to -25°C) and drought, showing good adaptability even in urban environments.
Pruning is generally limited to the removal of dry or damaged branches and to maintaining the desired shape. The flowering, as with all cedars, is inconspicuous and occurs in spring with small male and female cones, followed by the production of pine nuts.
This conifer is ideal as a specimen tree in large gardens, public parks, or even for creating visually striking green barriers, thanks to its intense blue color.
