Magnolia liliiflora ‘Betty’ is a deciduous ornamental shrub characterized by a compact, upright, and well-branched habit, with moderate growth that allows it to reach a height of about 2.5 to 4 meters, while maintaining balanced proportions even in small spaces.

The particularly decorative flowering appears in late spring, after the risk of late frosts has passed. The flowers are large and tulip-shaped, with deep purple petals on the outside and pale pinkish-white on the inside. Under favorable conditions, a second, lighter bloom may occur in summer.

After flowering, the plant produces deciduous, ovate-elliptic leaves that are dark green and turn light yellow in autumn.

Magnolia liliiflora ‘Betty’ prefers sunny or partially shaded locations and grows best in slightly acidic to neutral soils that are well-drained, fresh, and rich in organic matter. It is advisable to avoid calcareous soils or areas with waterlogging. It has good hardiness, tolerating temperatures down to around –15 to –18 °C, and its later blooming compared to other magnolias reduces its susceptibility to spring frosts.

Maintenance is minimal: regular watering during the hottest periods and light pruning, only if necessary to shape the plant or remove damaged branches, are usually sufficient.

Thanks to its natural elegance and low maintenance requirements, it is well-suited as a standalone specimen, in small gardens, flowering borders, or within residential landscape designs.
