Quercus palustris ‘Green Pillar’ is a variety of oak selected for its strictly columnar habit, making it perfect for urban environments, small gardens, or vertical spaces. Native to North America, this deciduous ornamental cultivar combines the typical hardiness of the species with a modern and elegant aesthetic, thanks to its dense foliage and compact form.

It reaches a height of about 12–15 meters, with a contained width of 3 to 4 meters, maintaining a narrow, upright shape even in adulthood. The leaves, typically lobed, are a bright green during the growing season and turn bright red or purple in autumn, creating a spectacular effect. In spring, it produces inconspicuous yellow-green catkins, followed by small round acorns that mature in the fall.

It prefers sunny exposures and deep, cool, well-drained soils, but also tolerates more humid conditions. It is a hardy plant, resistant to cold, wind, and air pollution, making it ideal for urban settings or structured landscapes.

Thanks to its moderate growth and low maintenance, Quercus palustris ‘Green Pillar’ is highly valued by landscapers and nurserymen for tree-lined avenues, narrow visual barriers, or neat rows along roads and fences. Its dense foliage also provides a good screening effect for privacy.

→ As an alternative to this type of oak, you can use Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata Koster’, another variety with a columnar shape
