Cupressus sempervirens ‘Pyramidalis’ is an evergreen conifer with a columnar and slender habit, an iconic symbol of the Mediterranean landscape, particularly the Tuscan hills. Belonging to the Cupressaceae family, this ornamental variety is distinguished by its strictly pyramidal and compact shape, with branches closely adhering to the trunk and a dense, elegant canopy that develops vertically without expanding too much laterally.
The foliage consists of small, pressed scales that are a deep, dark green, remaining persistent throughout the year, giving the plant a tidy and solemn appearance. The branches grow densely and parallel to the trunk, giving the plant a narrow profile, ideal for architectural contexts and formal landscapes. The woody, rounded cones appear sporadically and have secondary ornamental value.
Cupressus sempervirens ‘Pyramidalis’ can reach heights between 10 and 20 meters, maintaining a compact width of about 1-2 meters. The growth is moderately fast, especially under optimal conditions.
Resistant to drought, wind, and salt, this conifer is perfect for hilly, coastal, or arid areas. It prefers full sun exposure and adapts well to a wide range of well-drained soils, including poor or calcareous ones. It is not afraid of the cold, tolerating temperatures down to -15°C.
Maintenance is minimal: it does not require regular pruning, although it can be shaped to maintain its form in formal settings or to remove any dry branches. It is a long-lived, robust plant, highly valued for its verticality, which creates a strong visual impact in the garden.
Cupressus sempervirens ‘Pyramidalis’ is widely used as a single specimen, in rows along avenues and entrances, or as a vertical element in classical, contemporary, or Mediterranean gardens.
