Chamaerops excelsa is a palm native to the Mediterranean, known for its hardiness and adaptability to temperate and subtropical climates. It is one of the few native European palms, valued both for its ornamental appearance and for its resistance to low temperatures compared to other more delicate palms.

The plant has a solid, more or less branched trunk, which can reach a height of 3-5 meters, with a compact crown made up of dark green, robust, and stiff palmate leaves. The evergreen leaves, fan-shaped, are leathery and have spiny petioles, characteristics that help protect the plant from herbivorous animals.

Chamaerops excelsa prefers sunny or partially shaded exposures and adapts to poor, well-drained soils, including calcareous and rocky ones. It is particularly resistant to drought and wind, as well as cold, tolerating temperatures down to about -12°C. This characteristic makes it suitable for many types of Mediterranean gardens, both coastal and inland.

The flowering occurs in spring-summer with clusters of small yellowish flowers, followed by drupe fruits that turn blue-black and mature in the autumn.

This palm is often used as a solitary plant or in groups to create focal points in gardens, terraces, or public parks, thanks to its exotic appearance and ease of maintenance.

To keep Chamaerops excelsa healthy, a cleaning pruning is recommended to remove dry or damaged leaves, while watering should be moderate, avoiding waterlogging. Fertilizing in spring with palm-specific fertilizers promotes healthy and vigorous growth.
