Prunus serrulata ‘Kiku-shidare-zakura’ is one of the most elegant and scenic cultivars of ornamental cherry, belonging to the group of Japanese cherries, selected for its abundant flowering and distinctive weeping habit.
This variety stands out primarily for its late and spectacular bloom, which occurs between late April and early May. The flowers, a deep pink color, are very double, with dozens of tightly overlapping petals. Gathered in dense hanging clusters, they follow the curved shape of the branches, creating the effect of a cascade of pink flowers, making the tree a true centerpiece in the spring landscape.
It is a slow-growing tree, with moderate dimensions, ranging from 3 to 5 meters in height, and branches that curve and cascade downward, forming an umbrella-like canopy, soft and highly decorative.
The deciduous leaves, initially reddish or bronze-orange, turn bright medium green during the summer, and then take on warm hues in autumn, ranging from golden yellow to orange.
It prefers sunny exposures, where its bloom can fully express itself, and well-drained, fertile soils, preferably fresh and slightly acidic or neutral. It is a hardy plant, capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -15/-18°C, as long as it is well-exposed and not subject to waterlogging. Structural pruning is not necessary; only formative and maintenance pruning should be done after flowering.
Prunus serrulata ‘Kiku-shidare-zakura’ is particularly suitable for formal gardens, single flower beds, Japanese-style gardens, or courtyards. It is also often used in combination with decorative gravel or evergreen ground covers, which enhance its weeping canopy and delicate silhouette.
